Goldberg

The Goldberg writings was interesting to me because I like the part where  it talks about letting your thoughts come together in your mind and how sometimes your thoughts may not come to you right away but if you give it time the thoughts will come.
I could relate to this because often when I am writing, I need to sit and think about what I am going tI say before thoughts come into my head. It usually does not spark up right away and the writings also talked about how its like Sunday morning and you have a hangover and it takes a minute before the fog clears in your head.
I also liked the part that talked about not worrying about what other people say about your writings and just do you. Sometimes I have a fear of what other people may have to say when we share things in groups but I have learned that something that i may think is bad may actually be good.

bird by bird

Bird by Bird was really interesting this week because I like how the author transitioned from childhood all the way up to adult years. He talked about how his father and his father's friends were all addicted to drinking. And when he became older he also drank heavy wine in order to write his stories. He made a comment that kind of sent chills down my spine. He said that even though he ended up like his father and his fathers friends, his fathers friends started to commit suicide.
The readings were very easy to read and very easy to understand. Bird By Bird was very easy on the eyes and it kept me wanting to read it. I also liked how the book talked about how the main character started off writing. It seems like he got alot of inspiration from her father and his father was the one that kind of pushed him in that direction. Ever since he was younger her whole family always read books at night instead of sitting in front of the Tv.
Sometimes I wonder what it would be like to be a writer and be that heavily influenced under alcohol. I wonder what the writings would be like if the writers did not drink or smoke at all. The book kinda portrayed writers in a negative light. It made me think that writers are kind of egotistical people that drink and smoke. I do not think this is entirely true but alot of things in the book gave them this negative light.

Fiction Packet #1 Stories

The first story called,"Survivors" was definitely entertaining. It talked about a lover and his companion and how basically they were both dieing. I think that they were dieing from aids because in the beginning it talked about how they were low on T-Cells. This seemed to be a homosexual couple that faced many struggles because of their sexuality. One of them being that he was beaten by his dad because his dad believed that he could beat the gay out of him. It also talks about how his whole family disapproves of how he is living his life in a homosexual way.
When i read the story,"The list of famous Hats", i was expecting for it to talk about a bunch of different hats that famous people wore. Instead it talked about a bathing cap that Napoloeon wore and how it was too small for his head and how he never bought a new one ever since he was a child. It also talked about how he had to vaseline his head in order to put the cap on. This short story was very comical. I had a sense of comic relief to it. I like the different examples of details that it gave throughout the short story.
The short story,"misdemeanors" had me laughing. It talks about how an old man fabricates a robbery that he commited and how he went for the cash in the register and their was only change in the drawer. So when the police counted how much change he had, he was once cent short of a felony charge. Then so he spent 6 months in county jail. The whole time though the old man was telling this exstravacanrt story about the situation and his wife is telling what really happened! haha

Readings 5/23

I really like the poem, :Height and Deep Song". At first, this poem did not make much sense to me but as I continued to read into it I kind of came up with my own assumption as to what it meant. I thought that it meant that maybe someone (being a mother) was about to commit suicide by jumping off of a ledge and that people below were crying and screaming for her not to jump. I thought that she was pregnant because of the line," scramble of birth spill". The phrase that says,"the body arrives screaming", made me think of the mother committing suicide and her newborn baby surviving.
I also liked the poem 'Beauty's Standing. This poem made several references to nature, Civil rights, racism, and political matters. It was interesting when it talked about violence for no apparent reason. In part of the poem it talks about a ghost haunting the house of someone that was given, " a beating with no apparent reason". This was disturbing to me because violence happens all the time for no apparent reason especially in the African American Community. In the poem, it also says,"Who this time" which makes me think that this kind of thing happens all the time.
In the poem," Place lit by the window" it seems that part of it is being spoken from inside of a subway car. It talks alot about light vs. darkness. I like the way the words are written with details so you can imagine what kind of image is being displayed such as, "naked socket hanging from the ceiling, a sperm shape" this really jumped out to me and made me picture an actually socket that is hanging from the ceiling and how this might look. The poem also talks alot about bootstraps and pulling yourself up from the bottom up. Meaning when things go bad, pick up your chin and keep it moving.

Readings Fo the week of 5/14

I really liked the poem "Dim Lady" because it had a comic relief aspect to it./ I didn't quite understand all of the analogies but most of them were easy to understand. I found myself creating images in my mind of the different metaphors that were in the poem. Such as," If her mop were slinkys, dishwasher slinkys would grow on her noggin". I imagined slinkys growing from someon'e scalp.
i was kind of confused about the poem "Parade" because I wasn't sure if they were talking about a parade from which the soldiers came back from war or a parade dealing with Afican Americans like some sort of rally. But it was an interesting poem to think about.
Children's rhymes was kind of a little bit too real. lol It seemed to be an African American Child that was making up the little rhymes talking about how things are unfair when it comes to the color of skin. Or maybe its an adult talking about his childhood and how things were when he was a child.
